HISTOGRAM

The first Tool for examination was Histograms. How could a histogram assist in solving this problem Mr. George thought? Nonetheless, he sat back attentively listening to Sandeya and Tiana conduct the session.

This tool helps with the assessment and organisation of data with regard to the frequent number of complaints received by Candy Creations on their bad batch of Tropical Paradise candy. Now you may be wondering what exactly is a Histogram…?

According to INVESTOPEDIA, “A histogram is a graphical representation similar to a bar chart structure that organises a group of data points into user specified ranges.”

The link above provides you with a more detailed description and samples of a histogram.

Most people are often confused between a Histogram and a Bar Chart/Graph. Just to let you know, Histograms and Bar Charts/Graphs have similar characteristics, but they are not the same.

You didn’t know that, did you? Here is a link explaining the differences between a Histogram and a Bar Chart/Graph.

Okay great!

So now that you understand the differences between a Histogram and a Bar Chart/Graph, here are some steps you should consider when attempting to construct a histogram-

Evaluation / Activity: Wonderful! Now that you have read and learnt all about histograms let us try an activity! Candy Creations has experienced a dramatic increase over the past month in the number of complaints about the Tropical Paradise sweet crumbling. You are required to assist the quality manager in following the pattern of the complaints by constructing a simple histogram, given the following information:

Days (X axis) Number of complaints
(Y axis)
1-7 5
8-14 10
15-21 175
22-28 250
The Histogram highlighted that complaints increased considerably during the latter part of the month. The group began to deliberate on what significant change(s) took place over that period to have caused the problem.
